Elizabeth Nelson Studio: Landscape Paintings
For the past eight years I have been incorporating photographs of landscapes into my paintings, expanding the image out to the edges of the canvas using acrylic paint and gels. This provides a bridge between abstraction and realism for me. At the same time, I continue to make realistic paintings using both oil and acrylic mediums.
Before this, I made large paintings of acrylics stained on unstretched canvas with an underlying grid structure. These, too, always referred to landscape and were more abstract.
After graduating from Rhode Island School of Design and a masters program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, I moved to the farm in northern Vermont where I have lived ever since. I have shown my paintings in many venues in Vermont and New Hampshire, occasionally in Pennsylvania, New York and Massachusetts. I have won two Vermont Public Art commissions for a total of eight paintings and my work is part of the Vermont State Art Collection.
